Episode 1 - Mr. Kokkuri - Part 18.5 - Extra and Preview

Don't forget to read the first part, or the previous post if you haven't!

In the last part, we finally completed both routes, leaving only some extra FOAF files to obtain. In this post, however, I'll also add a preview for the next episode, so don't skip this post! But first, let's complete this episode, shall we?

[We'll start in the 'realistic' route after the principal shows us the Fox Mound]
There was something bothering me, so I mentioned---
                  >The fact that the students are still playing Mr. Kokkuri even now.
⬢ >The possibility that the accident 2 years ago wasn't an accident.
>Who was the student playing Mr. Kokkuri with Misa Sakita.
Let's follow the same route for now.
         >The possibility that the accident 2 years ago wasn't an accident.
"What if the accident 2 years ago wasn't an accident..."
"Eh!?" Mr. Kogure and the principal stared at me at the same time.
"I'm only speaking hypothetically, but if the accident two years ago involved some kind of artificiality, that could well be the motive for the current incident."
"W-wait a minute, Detective! Are you saying that this case is not a suicide?" The principal asks with a flurried face.
"No, we are investigating this as a suicide case, but we have an obligation to consider all possibilities before resolving the case."
Although I told him that, I don't think it was just a suicide. But there was no need to make a big fuss by telling him, so I kept quiet.
"Principal, sir. Do you know of any students who were close to the late Ms. Misa Sakita?"
"Oh, that would be Nozawa-kun from earlier. He's a {childhood friend} of Ms. Sakita's."
"Otherwise, no one would come to this mound, the one place nobody wants to go near, to pray every day."
"Childhood friend..."
Thus, Shouta Nozawa becomes the first suspect. His motive is to take {revenge} for the murder of his childhood friend.
Of course, this is assuming the incident two years ago was not an accident.
"Were there any other students she was close to? Who were the students Ms. Sakita played Mr. Kokkuri with?"
After a moment's thought, the principal shook his head. "Well..."
I was hoping to grasp something from the accident two years ago, but it can't be helped.
After leaving the Fox Mound, we asked the principal for permission to investigate the school.
"Sir. What are we going to do now?"
"Uhm, let's see..."

After thinking a bit, I chose to---
       >Look into Misa Sakita's accident.
        >Gather information from the students.

Now, we take the opposite option.
       >Look into Misa Sakita's accident.
I can't stop thinking about the accident that happened two years ago. Could this be related in some way to the recent string of suicides?
Or maybe it's just me trying to cling to the more grounded facts we've finally obtained.
"Mr. Kogure. Could you look into the accident that killed Misa Sakita?"
"Yessir! With pleasure!"
[Fade to black]

The Inui Police Department had jurisdiction over the case of Misa Sakita's accident. Mr. Kogure took out his cell phone, called his colleague, briefly explained the gist of the incident, and arranged to have the records from that time examined.
"...He said we'll be able to investigate it ASAP. Please wait a moment until they call me back, sir."
"Thank you, Mr. Kogure."
"By the way, sir. I just remembered something about the accident, have you heard of this story?"
Mr. Kogure, perhaps feeling bored while waiting for a call, started gossiping about something.
"Speaking of accidents, I heard a terrifying story the other day from one of my high school classmates." If it's so scary, why talk about it?
"This is a story that a friend of my classmate actually witnessed..."
[Background turns black]
"A few years ago, somebody jumped into the metro and committed suicide. It was a very crowded morning commute, and my classmate's friend was one of the people there."
"The metro service was temporarily halted and the scene was filled with onlookers who wanted to see what was happening."
"My classmate's friend also went to see it out of curiosity, finding a dismembered man's body lying there."

"And when he looked at the man's head on the platform, the man's head snapped open and said, "Don't look at me"..."
"What do you think, sir? Scary, isn't it?"
"Yeah, well..."
The story itself is a common type of rumor, but when told by a scared person, it sounded pretty creepy.
"I'm sorry, but you're now one of us. It's not very comfortable for me to bear all these scary stories by myself..."
...What. You just wanted to increase my involvement, didn't you? Mr. Kogure really is cowardly.

As if in anticipation of the end of our conversation, Mr. Kogure's cell phone began playing an incoming melody. [It's the same music as from Episode 0, btw]
"...Um...Um...Understood."
"There's a problem, sir. They couldn't find any record of Misa Sakita's accident."
"They couldn't find...?"
"Yes, sir. Either it went missing or someone has already taken it... My uselessness is disgraceful!"
Police records becoming lost isn't something that happens every day.
It's possible that someone else may have taken it out, but it's hard to imagine any detective besides us wanting to dredge up the details of a two-year-old accident.
We were both pondering with a "hmmm" when a tremendous thunderclap rumbled through the air.
[Screen flashes]
When I looked in the direction of the sound, I saw smoke coming from the wooded area where the Fox Mound was located. It was a lightning strike.
Although not the duty of a police officer, we cannot afford to overlook the possibility of a fire.
Mr. Kogure and I nodded to each other and ran back to the Fox Mound as fast as we could.

[Now we return to what's already shown. Let's skip to a certain scene]

Nervously, I---
                                     >Obey her order, "Certainly, my Queen!"
  >Firmly oppose her, "No!"

...
                                     >Obey her order, "Certainly, my Queen!"
I can't believe Ms. Hitomi had that kind of hobby... But, I can't let a woman be embarrassed. Thinking that everything is an experience, I took a strong step forward.
"Certainly, my {Queen}." Following Ms. Hitomi's words, I knelt with both hands and feet on the floor.
It's a figure that shouldn't be shown to others no matter what happens.
What kind of play will be waiting for me? My heart is racing. [Junya, no]
---Ouch!? This sudden pain came with something weighing on my back.

They were Ms. Hitomi's feet. Not too thick, not too thin, but long and stout. She was trampling on my back right now.
The situation is clear. This is unmistakably that. Am I finally being lured into the unknown world...?
---Ouchouchouch!? More pain and weight hit me.
T-this... doesn't feel good at all! If I get over this pain, will it turn into pleasure...?

"Nice work. Alright, Junya-kun."
The usual Ms. Hitomi stood there. "Huh...? It's already over?"
"Yeah. I was able to get this." There was a single book in her hand.
"What is that?"
"It's the school roster."
Ms. Hitomi just wanted to get a roster from a high place on the bookshelf. So she used me as a platform for that...
I am ashamed of myself for having made the mistake of being so enthralled.
But if you want a platform, you don't need me; you can just use any chair you have around. I rubbed my back and grumbled.
"Junya-kun. If we check this roster, we might find some new facts, don't you think?" It's as she says.
This was no time to play around with silly fantasies. I flipped through the pages of the list Ms. Hitomi handed me, trying to find a clue.

[Back to normal again, let's jump to the stakeout]

The question is whose house to stake out, but we settled on---
                >Kamiyama's house.
      >Horikawa's house.
   >Yamano's house.

Let's do both other options, one at a time.
               >Kamiyama's house.

It's been six hours since we began staking out Yuka Kamiyama's house. Stakeouts require a lot more patience than one might think.
If it's a stakeout based on suspicions and circumstantial evidence alone, it requires even more so.
"Sir, do you think Kamiyama will make a move?" Mr. Kogure repeats this question every hour.
"...I don't know."
Her motive is unclear. And there is no evidence against her. However, Kamiyama's obsession with Mr. Kokkuri is not normal.
"By the way, sir, have you heard of this story? A coworker friend of mine personally experienced it when he went on patrol..."
"He was riding in a patrol car with a colleague for a late-night patrol. It's inexcusable, but they decided to take a different route than usual for a change."
"The patrol was about to end without incident. They were only a few minutes away from the police station when all of a sudden there was a screeching noise coming from the radio."
"He checked to see what was going on and found nothing wrong with the radio. Within 30 seconds the noise stopped. After returning to the police station, he talked to an old senior officer, who told him that there had been a family slaughter at that very spot a long time ago..."

"My friend who told this story to me says that a ghost caused the interference. ...That couldn't be true, right!?"
I guess Mr. Kogure brought up this topic so I could refute it too.
I don't want to be untactful and make the ride home awkward, so I'll go along with him here.
"Of course, such a thing..." [Barely hearable static]
"Hiih!!?" Mr. Kogure let out a pitiful shriek at the noise that suddenly came out of the radio.
"I-it's alright, Mr. Kogure. It's just a coincidence." My voice cracked even as I said this.
"Or is there really a ghost prowling around here?" I attempted to control my fear with a joke.
...But that only made Mr. Kogure more frightened.
"P-please stop, sir!" Mr. Kogure covered his ears.
After a while, the radio went silent as usual, and the silence of the night took over once again.
"Mr. Kogure, it looks like it's fixed." I tapped on his shoulder while he was acting like one of the three wise monkeys.
"...H-has it subsided?"
"Yeah, everything's okay again. It looks like it was a temporary malfunction."
Despite my concern and optimistic words, Mr. Kogure seems unconvinced.
"Could it really have been just a malfunction...?" No one answered his words, and the question faded into darkness.

[We get the morning phone call after this]

The question is whose house to stake out, but we settled on---
                >Kamiyama's house.
      >Horikawa's house.
   >Yamano's house.

Next one.
   >Yamano's house.
It's been six hours since we began staking out Keiko Yamano's house. Stakeouts require a lot more patience than one might think.
If it's a stakeout based on suspicions and circumstantial evidence alone, it requires even more so.
"Sir, do you think Yamano will make a move?" Mr. Kogure repeats this question every hour.
"...I don't know."
Keiko Yamano, eh...? Her frightened appearance... That wasn't normal.
Perhaps she thinks she's next in line?
"By the way, sir, have you heard of this story? A coworker friend of mine personally experienced it when he went on patrol..."
"He was riding in a patrol car with a colleague for a late-night patrol. It's inexcusable, but they decided to take a different route than usual for a change."
"On the way there, I found a girl strolling in a forest park... or so I should say, but it's a pretty small park, anyway, she was walking aimlessly in there."
"She seemed to be a runaway, so he immediately took her into custody and asked her some questions, but she didn't utter a word, only nodding or shaking her head from side to side..."

"They reluctantly put the girl in the back of the police car and took her back to the police station."
"But just as they were about to arrive at the police station, he looked in the rearview mirror and saw that the girl had vanished..." [Zoom into the girl before the background fades away]
"Later, they searched the area around the park, worried about the girl... and found her slaughtered body."
"Sir... This is story is a lie, right!? Right!? My friend's just trying to scare me, isn't he!?"
I guess Mr. Kogure brought up this story so I could deny it too.
I don't want to be untactful and make the ride home awkward, so I'll go along with him here.

"Isn't that kind of urban legend very common? I've heard one myself. A passenger that should be riding a taxi disappears before the driver knows it... or something."
I reassured Mr. Kogure by adding, "It's a well-known story, you know. Maybe the one you heard was a different version of it."

"T-then, it's really true, isn't it!!?" Oy, where did that come from?
"N-no, um, well, Mr. Kogure..." He covered his ears and went into his shell, not even listening to my follow-up.
"Oh, brother. Wasn't this meant to be a stake-out?" I muttered to myself in-between sighs.

[Now, we'll jump sideways, we'll still be at the stakeout but on the other route]

I ask him about---
               >Kamiyama's savage transformation.
   >The true reason for the suicides.

Time for another file flood.
   >The true reason for the suicides.
"Hey, Brother. Did those girls who committed suicide really commit suicide?"
I inquired, despite thinking the wording was strange.
"Are you asking me if those women really died of their own volition?"
"Yeah... Ms. Hitomi swore in the name of all coroners that there was no doubt it was suicide, but still."
I don't want to doubt Ms. Hitomi's judgment, but I couldn't believe that those dead girls had taken their lives of their own volition.
"If Hitomi said that, then medically speaking, it definitely was suicide, so I'm not going to comment on it."
"You're expecting me to have a different take on things, aren't you?" I nodded silently.

"Alright then. It's said that fox-possession is a manifestation of {extra-sensory perception} or ESP."
I prepared myself, but then an incredibly shocking statement suddenly appeared.
"Fox-possession is a state of mental instability, and through it, one may be able to exhibit psychic powers."

"Yasumori Negishi, of "Earmuffs" fame, witnessed a fox-possessed woman displaying clairvoyant powers."
"There have been instances in the past of foxes controlling humans by invading their minds."
"Controlling humans...?" Isn't that just perfect for this case?

"Koukan Shiba's, a scholar of Western sciences, "Notes from the Shunba Tower (Shunbarou-hikki)" mentions a fox that manipulated a person."
" 'Naught but a fox's spirit may enter a man's body, humans, as we are, cannot attain this technique.' In other words, an ordinary human being could never compete with the spiritual power of a fox."
But, just because someone says we can't match up to them, doesn't mean we'll just give up with a "Yes, I see." It's our job to do something about it.
After that, the folklorist Suimei Kirisaki's lecture continued for a while.

[And that's all of them, quite a lot, but not enough for a post. So, let me show you a small preview]

[In handwritten Kanji]
The insect-loving daughter does not appear to Man so much as a woman or as a demon.

I saw it. Hidden in the park's bushes...
A boy was playing alone. She came there, that woman...
"Let's go." The woman held out her hand to the boy.

"Let's go, together." The boy joined hands with the woman...

No, no, no. You can't go.

At that moment, I ended up seeing it... That person's eyes...

Those eyes... Scarlet red... just like blood...

"IS SOMEONE THERE?"

Metropolitan Police Department Unofficial Case Record A-11
"Oni"

Hospitals at dusk are so calm they bring me ear pain...

I stared at my leg. The white cast, which had only just been set, was already scribbled on everywhere.
At first, I believed it was just an ordinary kidnapping, but... I think back to the case that put me in this position.
Hardly a good memory, but an experience I will never forget.
I only had been working in the Police History Archival Office for a little more than 10 days.
My first case ended up with me being hospitalized with a broken leg.
Still, in that situation, I would say it's fortunate that I only suffered a broken bone. If it had been any worse, I might have lost my life.
Once discharged from the hospital, I'll be busy with reports and write-ups regarding this incident.
Before reaching that point, this might be a good time to clear my head.
In the past few days, I've been exposed to many things. Envy, jealousy, hatred, and various other negative emotions that human beings possess. I've learned that the smallest misalignment can pull people into darkness.
And, a little bit of hope... I was saddled with all of them, but my hand was not big enough.
When I close my eyes in this way, I can recall it vividly. What I saw that night...
That... that was, definitely...
[Fade to black]

Let's end here, but how about I tell you some of the stuff that'll happen next part too? We'll see the first interaction between the boys and Inspector Indou, learning a bit about the Archival Office in the process, then we meet another member of the First Investigative Division, as friendly as the previous one. I don't want to show too much, so I think this should be enough.

Well, see you next time!

181 - Don't Look at Me

【見てんじゃねーよ、miten janeeyo】
[This is a very colloquial way to say 'don't look', "miten" is a conjugation of the verb 'to look', "janee" or "janai" means not, and "yo" is an assertive sentence-ender, these form "don't look (at me)". I chose to make that last part explicit to differentiate between another rumor they talk about in this file]

A man committed suicide by jumping onto the train tracks. The man's head, severed by the wheels of the train, separated from his torso and rolled around.

A company employee, who was unfortunately present at the scene, looked directly into the man's face. The head opened its eyes and said, "Don't look at me!"

This is the urban legend "Don't Look at Me". A similar story is known as the "Don't Look" rumor, in which a high school girl jumped instead and begged, "Don't look".

Another similar story is that of a man whose torso was cut in half in an accident, but whose upper body was chasing after the narrator, pleading, "Help..."

Now, if one were to ask whether a headless human being could actually speak, it would be impossible, of course.

This is because the head has already been separated from the diaphragm, which is used to emit air. However, although they cannot speak, they can still move somewhat.

One of the methods of execution in the past was the guillotine.

Needless to explain, the guillotine was invented in the 18th century by French physician Guillotin as a decapitation machine. It is thought to be the tool that claimed the most lives during the French Revolution, however, the concept of a decapitation machine is believed to actually have existed for much longer.

There exist stories of heads executed by this guillotine blinking a few times when their names were called out. Additionally, an executioner also claimed that a torso moved after being separated from its head.

These events can all be explained as muscle spasms after death, and since a person loses consciousness immediately due to changes in blood pressure in the brain, they cannot move of their own volition.

198 - Spirits and Electromagnetic Interference

【霊と電波障害、rei to denpa-shougai】

The relationship between spiritually sensitive people and spirits is often compared to that of a radio and radio waves. The human body is a radio, so to speak, and a spiritual person is equipped with channels to sense spirits, the radio waves. Occasionally, spirits seem to approach the airwaves, though not necessarily because of that.

A theory exists that when a spirit draws near a radio, the signal becomes disrupted and static is produced. Not only that but sometimes words are uttered through the radio.

It is said that on a certain national highway in Saitama Prefecture, there is a place where, when listening to the AM radio while driving, the voices of spirits blend into it. There is also a story of a series of accidents, whose victims had heard the voices of spirits which were mixed in the radio.

Moreover, the voices of spirits are sometimes recorded. There are many CDs that contain creepy voices or screams, even though they have been auditioned by numerous people and released to the public. There are also many tales of spirit sightings in recording studios.

152 - Yasumori Negishi

【根岸鎮衛、negishi yasumori】

He was a magistrate in the southern part of Edo (present-day Tokyo) and is known as the author of "Earmuffs (Mimi-bukuro)", a collection of folk anecdotes and rumors.

He was born in Genbun 2 (1737) as the third son of Sadahiro Yasuki, a retainer of the shogunate. In Houreki 8 (1758), he was adopted by Morinori Negishi and later became a treasurer.

In 1784, he was appointed magistrate of Sado. Yasumori, who had always enjoyed writing, began recording stories he learned from acquaintances and rumors in the town so that he would not forget them. After serving as chief treasurer, he was appointed magistrate of Minamimachi in Kansei 10 (1798).

It was an exceptional career move for a person of his time to rise from the ranks of a vassal to that of a magistrate, and his character earned him the reputation of being a great magistrate. In fact, Yasumori was capable and good-natured, and excelled at bringing out the best in others.

Earmuffs has ten volumes in total and contains many anecdotes and colorful stories, however, it was written solely for his own enjoyment, and despite including tales of ghosts and youkai, it seems that Yasumori himself did not believe in the existence of such things.

141 - Clairvoyance

【透視能力、toushi-nouryoku】

Clairvoyance is generally thought to be the power to see through objects, such as seeing the contents of a locked box, but it is actually more than that.

The ability to see the contents of an object is called "ordinary clairvoyance", and other clairvoyant abilities include "remote clairvoyance", which is the ability to see distant scenery or events from a distance, "precognition", and also "hindsight", the ability to correctly recount past events. Psychometry, the ability to read an object's memory by touching it, is also a type of clairvoyant ability.

Clairvoyant research has been conducted for many years, and the study of clairvoyant abilities conducted by psychologist Tomokichi Fukurai during the Meiji era is well known in Japan. Tomokichi Fukurai believed that a woman named Chizuko Mifune was clairvoyant, and after conducting several experiments, he concluded that her ability was genuine.

His research was widely covered by the press at the time, and even led to a major controversy, but her power was later denounced as trickery, and finally came to a sad end when the woman committed suicide by poisoning herself.

Also, in the 1960s, Dutch psychic Gerard Croiset used his abilities to solve numerous cases through clairvoyance. In 1976, he made headlines when he told the location of the body of a missing girl on a TV program.

Abroad, these powers are still being used in criminal investigations, and many cases are said to have been solved as a result.

In addition to criminal investigations, there is also a story that in 1990, this clairvoyance was used in military laboratories to spy on secret Iraqi military bases during the Gulf War.

124 - Taxi Ghosts

【タクシー幽霊、takushii yuurei】

One night, a cab driver picks up a young woman. When they arrived at her destination, the driver looked in the rearview mirror. The woman was not there.

Although puzzled, he rang the doorbell of the house and told the man who answered the door what had happened, because he had to get his fare. The man showed a sad expression.

---He told the driver that the woman was his daughter and that she had died a few years ago by throwing herself into the river. When the driver returned to the cab, the back seat was soaking wet---

Similar to "The Vanishing Hitchhiker", this urban legend is a story that exists all over the world. Another pattern is that the destination is a cemetery. In the U.S. and Europe, the story is told of a hitchhiker, rather than a taxi passenger, reflecting the local characteristics of the area.

The origin of this story is quite old and can be traced back to the time when palanquins were the main means of transportation in Japan.

104 - Notes from the Shunba Tower

【春波楼筆記、shunba-rou hikki】

Miscellaneous writings penned by Koukan Shiba in his later years.

The contents of the work are diverse, ranging from anecdotes to philosophical writings, and Koukan's reflections on the universe.

In this book, Koukan also confessed to making and selling forgeries of Harunobu Suzuki, a famous painter of beautiful women, which has led to the theory that Koukan = Sharaku, another famous Edo painter.

The Notes from the Shunba Tower contains several descriptions of foxes.

A maidservant living in Hogenzaka saw a fireball on a rainy day, and the next day, the second son of her employers wrestled with a white-haired, gold-eyed monster with a fireball in its hand. In addition, he also describes another incident in which a man possessed by a fox was cured.

This suggests that, along with the popularity of Inari worship during the Edo period (1603-1868), it was believed that foxes were responsible for many strange occurrences.

94 - Koukan Shiba

【司馬江漢、shiba koukan】

Born in Edo in Enkyou 4 (1747) as the son of a merchant. He studied Kanou school-style painting.

Later, he studied Ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) and other styles of painting, but his encounter with Gennai Hiraga and Naotake Odano awakened his interest in Western-style painting.

He adopted the techniques of Western painting and painted many Japanese landscapes featuring Fuji and other subjects using perilla oil.

In Tenmei 3 (1783), he succeeded in producing the first copperplate engraving in Japan.

In Tenmei 8 (1785), when he went to Nagasaki to study Western-style painting, he enjoyed playing billiards, as it is called today, as described in "Journal of a Tour to the West (Saiyuu Nikki)" a travel diary to Nagasaki.

In addition, Koukan was also an accomplished philosopher and social thinker, with a background in astronomy and geography.

Episode 1 - Mr. Kokkuri - Part 18 - End 2

Don't forget to read the first part, or the previous post if you haven't!

In the last part, we had a stakeout outside one of our suspects' houses, but despite our (and our coworkers) best efforts, a murder still occurred. As with the realist route, we then received a call from a mysterious benefactor, leading us to the Police History Archival Office and the core of this case. Now, we'll see the resolution of this incident through.

After escaping the darkness of the basement, we hurriedly contacted the detectives who were assigned to Yuka Kamiyama.
"I'm sorry! We lost her!" Kamiyama shook off the detectives and fled. She hasn't returned to her home too.
Just in case, I also contacted the detectives keeping an eye on Mari Horikawa and Shouta Nozawa but got the same answer.
Every student involved in this case disappeared all at once. Something is about to happen.
Reflexively, I shouted. "Mr. Kogure! We need to head to the school at once!"

Wednesday 3:44 PM
Hanamine Private High School

[The background moves from inside the school's classrooms to the hallways, before showing the path to the Fox Mound]

Someone's here.
A person is holding their hands in front of the sooty, lightning-struck Fox Mound.
They're Shouta Nozawa. Even after two years, his feelings for Misa Sakita have remained unchanged. His figure was heartbreaking.

"Nozawa-kun..."
"Kamiyama..."
Kamiyama appeared. As expected, she came here.
(Sir, should we take action?)
(...Let's wait and see a little longer.)
For her safety, we should act immediately. However, the desire to see where this incident, which cannot be measured by common sense, will head towards prevailed.
"...Where you praying for Misa?"
"Yeah... What did you come here for?"
"You make it sound like I'm not allowed to be here. Misa and I used to be best friends."
"......"
"Nozawa-kun, how long are you going to keep holding onto Misa? Are you going to keep thinking only of Misa for the rest of your life?"
"...I do as I please. It's none of your business."
"It is! Because, I... I love you!"
"Please don't talk about that kind of thing in here."
"Why!? Do you think Misa can hear us!? Misa's dead! Why can't you just forget about dead people!?"

"Stop it! Even after that, you would still call yourself Misa's friend!?"
"It's not just Misa! Hasebe, Itou, and Yamano, weren't they your friends!? Were you thinking that when they died too!?"
"When Misa died, you cried, didn't you? You comforted and cried with me, didn't you!? Was that all a lie!?"
"Did you really not care about Misa at all!?"
"I did care... Misa was a true friend..."
"But... everything changed when I found out about you."
"I couldn't help but love, love, love you! And then, I couldn't help but hate, hate, hate Misa!"
"That's why... That's why...!"
"That's why you used Mr. Kokkuri to drive Misa Sakita to suicide."
"Horikawa!?"

"Ms. Kamiyama... you fell in love with Nozawa-kun."
"Using Mr. Kokkuri, you relentlessly pressed Misa Sakita about her relationship with him."
"You were intensely jealous of Misa Sakita. You forced her to go along with playing Mr. Kokkuri, which she didn't want to do, and slowly but steadily drove her into a corner."
"Misa Sakita was betrayed by who she thought was her friend, you, and her body and spirit crumbled, then that accident happened..."
"W-what are you talking about? I don't know! I didn't do anything like that!"
"How could you know anything when you only just transferred here!?"
"Fufu. Your pretty face is wrinkling, Ms. Kamiyama. I bet you must be very upset to have the truth revealed in front of the person you love."
"You really love Nozawa-kun, don't you? But it's meaningless. His heart already belongs to Misa Sakita."
"What did you say!? You're the one who told me I could get my wish granted if I asked Mr. Kokkuri!"
"Ahahaha. You must love him greatly, after all, there's no way you would have fallen for such a ridiculous lie otherwise..."
"A lie...? A lie, you say...!? Then, what was playing Mr. Kokkuri all for...? What did Kaori and the others die for!?"
"Oh? Isn't that all your fault?"

UWAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!

The voice of a beast that has lost all its reason plays in concert with the thunder.
Horikawa's words broke the last hold that had held Kamiyama's heart together.
Kamiyama has transfigurated, just like that time---

The beast's left hand comes down on Horikawa's throat. She throws Horikawa's body as if throwing out a scrap of paper.

She then grabs Horikawa by the neck and hangs her in midair with one hand. It's hard to believe that a woman like her has the muscle strength to do that.
Shouta Nozawa is unable to move very far. As it is, Horikawa's life is in danger. Mr. Kogure and I jump out at the same time.
"Stop it, Kamiyama!"
"Get your hands off her!" As I shout, I grab her arm.
But she didn't even twitch. Her arm was as stiff as steel.
Mr. Kogure, who is attempting to bind her other arm behind her back, also seems astonished.
[Thump]
Kamiyama's left hand, which she moved carelessly, swept us away effortlessly.

<Kukuku...>
<You humans have imparted me with great delight.>
<Who amongst you shall I sip blood from?>
What is this? This isn't Kamiyama's voice. This is the voice of the "something" inside Kamiyama.

<I have chosen... Bestow me your blood.>

"Kihiiiiiih!" The beast in Kamiyama's form swooped down on Shouta Nozawa.
"Uwaaaah!"
If Misa Sakita's grudge is the root of all these strange phenomena, the only person she wouldn't harm would be Shouta Nozawa.
Sakita loved Shouta Nozawa. Why would she attack that same Nozawa...?
Could it be that what's now residing inside Kamiyama isn't Misa Sakita's hatred...!?
I was unable to move in the face of the unforeseen.
Kamiyama was moments away from biting him in the throat. However, Kamiyama stopped by herself.

"N-Nozawa-kun..."
"Kamiyama...!?" She fought against the "something" inside her. Desperately struggling until she overcame the unknown force within her.
"I'm sorry... For something like this to happen..."
"Everyone, their deaths were all my fault..."
"I'm sorry, everyone..."
"I just loved Shouta-kun, and yet..."
"I'm sorry..."
[Screen turns red]

It was only for a fleeting moment.
Horikawa, who we thought had fainted, jumped on Kamiyama before she had time to stop her.

A piece of wood was thrust deep into Kamiyama's side.

<Guhgiiiiiiiih!>
A cursed voice seemed to gush out from the bottom of the earth.
The very air trembles. The many trees rustle as if frightened. Ceaseless evil thoughts scattered indiscriminately.
<Youuuuuu...! Damned humannnn...!>
At that moment, I thought I saw something. The shadow of an inhuman being in agony---
[Slow fade to black]

A series of inexplicable events befuddles my mind. However, I can't afford to stay bewildered. I must sort out this whole case...

(Verification 1)
Misa Sakita's death is at the core of the case. What triggered it?
>Suicide >Traffic Accident >Bullying >Witch Trials

[As I said in this episode's other IL segment, I'll skip explaining my reasoning most of the time, and after this post, I won't put a message like this too]
 >Bullying

(Verification 2)
Who is responsible for this series of suicides?
>Mari Horikawa >Yuka Kamiyama >Shouta Nozawa >Misa Sakita >Vengeful Spirit

Although the Mound's original haunting did participate in these murders, Horikawa's actions show that she's still possessed by Sakita.
>Misa Sakita

(Verification 3)
How did the perpetrator make one student after another commit suicide?
>Mr. Kokkuri >Self-suggestion >Curse

>Curse

(Verification 4)
Finally, Kamiyama's transformation weights on my mind. What in the world caused it?
>Curse >Fox Possession >Vengeful Spirit

>Fox Possession

[Let's fill in the other blanks]

>Ouija Board >Wish >Memorial >Sacrifice
>Blood (The blood ritual was necessary for gaining blood.)
[Wish is still correct, but Sacrifice is half-right]

>Friends >Curse >Childhood Friends
>Romantic Feelings (Yuka Kamiyama loved Shouta Nozawa.)

>Classmates >Friends >Childhood Friends
>Romantic Feelings (Misa Sakita and Shouta Nozawa loved each other.)

>Fox Possession
>Ouija Board (The person who attempted to burn the Ouija board was Yamano.)

>Friends >Childhood Friends
>Plaything (Mr. Kogure is my brother's plaything.)

>Romantic Feelings
>Friend (My brother and Ms. Hitomi are friends.)

[All done, let's begin the verification]

(Verification 1)
Misa Sakita's death is at the core of this case. It was "bullying" that triggered it.
Details of the bullying can be read in the diary of Misa Sakita, found in the Police History Archival Office.
One could say that this incident began with her death.

(Verification 2)
The culprit is "Misa Sakita".
I'm reluctant to call someone who has already passed away the culprit, but I have to admit it by now.
Narumi Hasebe... Kaori Itou... Keiko Yamano...
The students we believe to have been involved in Misa Sakita's bullying have died bizarre deaths one after another.
This incident was not done by the hand of the living...
The only thing that bothers me is that she also tried to personally kill Shouta Nozawa.
If she was the culprit, then only he wouldn't have been harmed...

(Verification 3)
How did Sakita make one student after another commit suicide?
Through the "curse" of Misa Sakita, who was bullied to death...
I think the only way to explain this bizarre incident is to believe that Misa Sakita's grudge took her revenge.
Of course, there is no evidence. That might disqualify me as a detective.
But that was what I observed.

(Verification 4)
And, for Kamiyama's curious transfiguration.
What on earth happened to Kamiyama? Only "fox possession" could explain it.
Kamiyama was the most active person involved in bullying Misa Sakita.
Cursed by the vengeful spirit of Misa Sakita, who sleeps in the Fox Mound, she has been transformed into that figure...
It's only a guess. Moreover, it's ridiculously unrealistic...

[They're all correct, let's see the epilogue]

Several days later---
Despite all those incidents, Hanamine Private High School has returned to its normal school life as if nothing had happened.
Although the information should have already leaked to the press, the TV, newspapers, and even gossip magazines refused to mention the events that took place there.

Shouta Nozawa and Mari Horikawa were rushed to Kamone University Hospital, escaping with only minor injuries.
Horikawa had lost all memory of the past few months, including of being transferred to Hanamine High.
Ms. Hitomi told me that she had "partial memory loss due to cranial trauma".
I asked about the possibility of her memories returning, but the answer was very vague: sometimes they would remember tomorrow, and sometimes they wouldn't remember for good.
Why Horikawa stabbed Kamiyama remains a mystery.
And so does the reason why Horikawa knew about Misa Sakita...

Yuka Kamiyama was also supposed to be taken to Kamone University Hospital but disappeared without a trace.
Not only her. The ambulance that carried her, the paramedics, they were all gone.
A nationwide manhunt was arranged to locate her, but so far no one has been able to trace her whereabouts, almost as if she had been spirited away. The search is currently underway for her disappearance and abduction.
For that reason, the assault case against Mari Horikawa was suspended until she was found.
In the end, no hard evidence was found to prove the existence of the curse...

We visited the professor's office in the university to report to my brother for his cooperation in our investigation.
"I see... So that was the conclusion that awaited you, huh?" After hearing everything, Brother lights a cigarette.
"Brother, do you think the curse really existed?"
"I believe so, at least. As long as negative emotions such as hatred and resentment exist in people's hearts, the curse will never fade away..."
My brother then exhaled a large plume of smoke with a self-deprecating smile on his face.
[Fade to black]
Kamiyama, too, started out purely in love. However, her feelings became distorted, which resulted in many losses.
Hate and sorrow were created because of love. Given that the human heart can produce curses, similar tragedies will continue to repeat themselves in the future.
For as long as we humans live...
I've decided to write a full report of the phenomena I saw and heard during this incident.
It was the only memorial service I could offer to the victims.

[Wideshot of the MPD]

The next morning, I went to work with the report I had written, prepared to be fired, but what greeted me was a letter of transfer.
"...Well, that's how it is."
Huh, isn't that strange? I still haven't sent in my report.
I felt caught off guard.
However, the Chief, seemingly not caring what was on my mind, casually shoved the letter of transfer into my hands and quickly returned to his desk.
When I looked down at the letter of resignation handed to me, I saw an unbelievable array of letters.
Lieutenant Junya Kazami is assigned to the Police History Archival Office as of today.
I must have been frozen stiff for at least 30 seconds, and even the Chief gave me a sympathetic look.
The Police History Archival Office... Speaking of it, that fifth basement floor...
Why was I transferred to that place? In the first place, it wasn't functional at all, was it?

My steps toward the isolated underground world were heavy, and not just because of my imagination.
I'd rather be fired than be forced into a dusty, closed room like that.
With these thoughts in mind, I went down to the fifth basement floor where the Police History Archival Office is located.
"Sir!"
"Uwah! M-mr. Kogure!?"
"Yes, sir! It's been a while!" Mr. Kogure bowed with a big smile.
"I too have been assigned to the Police History Archival Office, sir. I look forward to working with you in the future. Thank you!"
For even Mr. Kogure to be assigned to this place...
It's too sudden. Moreover, we've been assigned to a department that we'd never heard of until recently. I can only assume that some kind of great influence exerted itself on the top brass.
"Um, sir?"
"Yes?"
"To tell you the truth, the Archival Office has been, uh... acting very strangely."
"Strange?" Mr. Kogure said there was a light leaking from the room, and that he could hear people's voices coming from inside.
I then remembered the rumors about the Archival Office.
"...It is said that, sometimes, you can hear voices coming from the supposedly concrete-filled fifth basement floor."
"They say that a detective who died in the line of duty is still working on cases, even after death..."

[Wideshot of the door, including the fluorescent light above it]

"Let's go." Accompanied by Mr. Kogure, I stood in front of the Office's door.
A plate affixed to the dirty iron door bears the words "Police History Archival Office".
Up to this point, nothing had changed from how it was the other day. However, as Mr. Kogure said, a light was leaking from inside the room, and what sounded like human voices could be heard.
"S-sir." Mr. Kogure came up behind me, looking concerned. His large body had shrunk to about one size smaller than usual.
"I'm opening it." With determination, I turned the doorknob.

"...just now rounding the second turn, and five horses are battling for the lead."
"The orange cap, Psychic Tsukasa holds the lead by a small margin, with Shinoda Golem just behind, in the second place..."
Live horse racing? This BGM isn't appropriate for a room in a police station.
The Police History Archival Office. This is the second time I've been in this room.
However, what I saw now was a room that seemed to be in good working order, if not quite spotless.
There were no scattered papers, no dust, no corpses of starved-to-death insects.
...Am I dreaming?
"...Oh ho! Itako Hayakawa has made a move at the last corner!" [Itako is a type of female spirit medium from northeastern Honshu who is typically blind]
The horse race was still being broadcasted. I don't know much about horse racing, but I could tell from the announcer's enthusiastic voice that the race was in its final stages.
"Itako Hayakawa has passed! Itako Hayakawa has passed! Can Psychic Tsukasa outrun her!?"
"Itako Hayakawa! It's Itako Hayakawa! Itako Hayakawa won---!!!"
"YEAAHHH!!"

A woman stood up triumphantly, not even noticing us, and thanked God, Buddha, Ebisu-sama, and all the gods in an unrestrained manner.
She was about 30 years old. I could not tell her exact age due to her energetic appearance. Actually, she might be around 40.
"Ah, um..." I called out to her like a child who had wandered into an unfamiliar world.
"Hm? Who're y'all?" I wanted to ask similarly in return but decided not to. If I had done that, the conversation wouldn't have moved forward.
"This place is the MPD, right?" I thought it was a stupid question, but I had to check.
"More or less." I guess I'm more or less in the MPD then.
If so, this must still be the Police History Archival Office. I bowed respectfully and greeted her.
"I am Lieutenant Junya Kazami, assigned to the Police History Archival Office as of today! I look forward to working with you!"
"Similarly, I'm Sergeant Souichirou Kogure, ma'am!" The woman watching the live racing broadcast looked at us as if we were rare animals.
Although she doesn't wear makeup at all, I wouldn't hesitate to say she's beautiful.
"I didn't think it was possible, no way would someone actually show up. What was he thinking bringing in two kids like that just because we were short on staff?"
It was a very unwelcoming line. The woman introduced herself with a resigned sigh, "Oh weeellll."
"I'm Ranko Indou. You write "Indou" with 'In', like a doggy, and 'dou', like in Shuten-douji. My rank's Inspector."
"I-I-I-Inspector!?"
"That's right, Inspector" Perhaps amused by Mr. Kogure's reaction, Inspector Indou laughed in amusement.
"Well, I know you're going through a lot, but hang in there." A piece of paper fell from the pocket of the Inspector as she turned away.
"Ah, Inspector---"

[This is shown for little more than a second]
The wind whipped by. My outstretched hand grips the empty air.
"Big thanks." Inspector Indou stuffed the piece of paper in her hand into her pocket haphazardly. As if nothing had happened...
"Sir, that move, no ordinary person could make that." Mr. Kogure, who holds a third dan in judo, a third dan in kendo, and a second dan in karate, was absolutely sure of what he was saying.
But I saw something more interesting than that.
For a brief moment, the piece of paper that the Inspector had almost dropped looked just like the talisman from that day.

[A phone rings]

A black phone's bell rings, interrupting my thoughts.
It was easy to guess who was on the other end of the phone.
I put my ear to the receiver and, as expected, I hear that man's voice.
"Welcome. To the Police History Archival Office..."

Comprehensive Evaluation: S Class
Episode One - Mr. Kokkuri - End

"Now then... How did this story strike you?"
What an unbelievable case. This series of suicides related to Mr. Kokkuri, as told by the man. Not to mention the melodramatic tragedy that waited at the end.
But, the man's skillful storytelling did make me feel as if I myself was a party to the incident.
"Negative human emotions, such as resentment and hatred, sometimes cause strange occurrences that cannot be explained by science."
"The extraordinary, such as spirits and curses, are in fact all around us, because it's always our human mind that creates them..."
"The most terrifying thing in the world is Man." His voice was tinged with sadness.
It's the human mind that creates the monstrous... huh... For some reason, I felt the man's words were telling the truth.
It's as if I had seen people trapped in this darkness before, time and time again...
"By the way, have you heard of this story? I heard of it from a friend of a friend---"

We're done! Mostly, that is. Let me first talk about my opinion on this route and episode in general. I liked it, I think this case is a good introduction to the main characters in general, both old and new. The comedic scenes were pretty funny, but the horror scenes weren't as good as those of the previous episode. I think this chapter had more thrilling scenes, though. I have one problem with this route, the resolution ended too suddenly, I think the other route had a better conclusion, honestly. However, I do like how each route explained half of the case, something also present in the past episode.

My opinions aside, I need to explain something about the next post. There's a ton of missed dialogue, but only some of them have F.O.A.F. files attached, so, I've decided to put only these dialogues plus a certain choice that unlocks an extra keyword. This is so we can start the next episode ASAP. If any of you guys don't like this choice or wanted me to translate a specific option I didn't choose, please comment on this post or on my Twitter.

Either way, see you next time!
