The "!" traffic sign refers to a "different kind of danger".
Typically, a supplementary sign meaning "weak berm", "poor visibility", or some such, is placed below the "!" sign.
However, some of them exist without any indication.
For this reason, there is a rumor going around that such signs are often the site of unexplained accidents, i.e., accidents caused by ghostly apparitions.
In fact, it is not difficult to imagine that the presence of the sign indicates that there must be many accidents in its vicinity. It is thought that this is the reason for the rumors.
The lack of a supplementary sign is supposed to be due to an obvious cause, such as a large tree overhanging the road or some other obstacle that would impede traffic, but still...
In addition, there is another famous road sign rumor. It is about the "pedestrians-only" sign.
This sign features a picture of a parent and child holding hands, but in fact, this seeming parent-child symbol is actually a representation of a child being held by a kidnapper.
It is said that when the sign was selected from a public campaign, the photograph that was sent was actually a photo that happened to show a kidnapper pulling a child away by the hand.
In reality, however, this sign is a United Nations designated traffic sign, which is an international standard for signs, and was not designed based on a photograph, as rumored.
