【根付く、nedzuku】
Potted plants are considered inappropriate for inquiries, as the Japanese "nedzuku", meaning to take root, could be mistaken for the homonym "nedzuku (寝付く)", meaning to fall ill.
Additionally, flowers with strong colors and fragrances are also considered unsuitable for sympathy visits.
Other plants are avoided due to their ominous associations, such as camellias, which are considered unlucky because of the way their petals fall off, or cyclamens (シクラメン, shikuramen), because their Japanese name can be confused with "death pains (死苦, shiku) and lament (ラメント, ramento)", among others.
