【護法神、gohoujin】
['Gohou' is a word meaning 'the protection of Buddhism', which is attached to the character for god.]Also called Gohouzenjin, they are gods that protect Buddhism.
Among the Gohoujin, there is Bonten [Brahma], Taishakuten [Indra], the Four Heavenly Kings that serve him, the twelve divine generals of Bhaisajyaguru, and so on.
Brahma is the deified form of Brahman, the fundamental principle of the universe in Indian philosophy, and is the supreme deity of India, and Shakra was originally an Indian god of war called Indra, and so forth. Most of them are ancient Indian deities.
