110 - Shinto-Buddhist Separation

【神仏分離、shinbutsu-bunri】

This term refers to the abolition of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism that took place in 1868 under the decree of the Meiji government.

The purpose was to make a clear distinction between the ancient Japanese Shinto religion and Buddhism, which had previously been fused together under the Meiji government's theocratic policy.

As a result, the movement to abolish Buddhism was born, which caused the destruction of many temples and Buddhist ritual implements, and Jinguuji temples in various regions were either abolished or became independent as Buddhist temples.
